As already mentioned, I’ve put my multiple boxes of acrylics, canvasses and brushes aside, and got stuck into being creative with driftwood.
Driftwood art is quite big in the UK, probably because we’re surrounded by sea and it reflects our maritime heritage. From lampshade stands, to life size horse sculptures, there’s no holds barred for those looking to be creative with this free commodity (though people widely sell it on eBay here). Being in Porthcawl, with it’s lovely coastline, and also a 3 mile long beach just 8 mins walk down the hill from me, I kind of got sucked into it!
In November last year I decided to take the plunge and try to create a driftwood mirror. Initially I was going to buy one online for a couple of hundred quid, but thought what the hell I’ll give it a go. The first one I did uses different types of wood in a multitude of colours and is just over 3ft in diameter. Phil my husband was actually gob smacked at how great it turned out, so now it has pride of place above the fireplace. I was quite delighted at the final result, but I suppose it helped having worked on previous complicated creations, such as ‘To Follow’, I felt quite confident with the glue gun.
In total ,with the one just I’m just finishing, I’ve done 22 individual mirrors. Each one completely different, and making the most of the quirky pieces of wood I keep finding. I’ve done mixed colour wood mirrors, yellowy-blond ones, a mottled snakeskin coloured one and most recently white ones. They are all round and range in sizes from almost 4 ft to 2 ft in diameter. I’m going to load them all up individually on here, so you can have a good peruse. And maybe, if you fancy, get in touch and buy one!
OK, so let’s quit the wittering and give you a sneak peak at three of my recent creations – Salt Licked, Midnight and Beach Memories. That reflection you’ll see in the mirror is ‘To Follow’ hanging on the lounge wall. Click on each one to enlarge it slightly. Hope you like them!
